On July 5th, 1982 a shootout between the Saskatoon Police Service and Harvey Andres occurred at a home and at the Canarama Shopping Centre in the River Heights area. On July 5th Andres kidnapped Clara Scrutton and took her to her home. When police arrived after responding to a suspicious person call he shot Corporal Kenneth Sawyers at a rural home before being tracked down to the Canarama mall parking lot and shot down by Sergent Jim Cox. Andres is currently in prison for life in Alberta. No one was killed during the incident. The Canarama Mall Shootout shocked the neighbourhood however the crime statistics currently show a peaceful area of Saskatoon.
